Coast Guard, NOAA conduct joint boardings in the Gulf of Alaska

JUNEAU, Alaska — The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter John McCormick and an officer from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of Law Enforcement conducted joint safety and living marine resource boardings in the Gulf of Alaska last week.

The boarding team, consisting of a Coast Guard boarding team and a NOAA enforcement officer, conducted 11 boardings of commercial fishing vessels.

During these boardings the joint team ensured compliance of all applicable federal commercial fishing vessel safety and fisheries regulations.

“These are the boardings that need to be happening,” said NOAA enforcement officer Tim Coffey. “Fisheries offshore in the Gulf of Alaska are some of the most difficult and most important to enforce. Getting aboard individual fishing quota vessels is one of the best things we can be putting our efforts into.”

 

“We hope to take advantage of every opportunity to conduct joint law enforcement operations,” said Lt. Mike Moyseowicz, Cutter John McCormick commanding officer. “Having NOAA enforcement officer Coffey aboard enhanced our law enforcement capabilities exponentially. Our boarding team members learned a lot from his fisheries expertise.”
