PORTSMOUTH, Va. — Coast Guard Atlantic Area will host a change-of-command ceremony Friday at Training Center Yorktown, Virginia.

During the ceremony, Rear Adm. Scott A. Buschman will assume command from Vice Adm. Karl L. Schultz.

Schultz, the outgoing Atlantic Area commander, has been confirmed by the Senate to be the service’s next commandant, and will assume command of the Coast Guard during a ceremony June 1 in Washington, D.C.

Buschman, the current deputy commander for Atlantic Area, has held previous flag officer assignments as commander of the Seventh Coast Guard District in Miami and the Coast Guard’s Force Readiness Command.

The Atlantic Area commander is the operational commander for all Coast Guard forces east of the Rocky Mountains to the Arabian Gulf, from Canada to the Caribbean Sea, encompassing more than 14 million square miles of land, 42 states and more than 4 million square miles of navigable water.

The change-of-command ceremony is a historic Coast Guard and Naval tradition. The event, which has remained unchanged for centuries, includes a reading of the command orders in the presence of all unit crew members.

Media are invited to attend the ceremony. Media interested in attending the ceremony must RSVP no later than 1 p.m. Thursday by calling Senior Chief Petty Officer Ryan Doss at 757-641-0763. Media attending must present affiliate issued credentials and a valid state issued ID to gain access to Training Center Yorktown.

Media interested in interviewing Shultz and/or Buschman following the ceremony are asked to request an interview at the time of RSVP.
