Coast Guard responds to a report of diesel sheen in Haverstraw, N.Y.

NEW YORK — Coast Guard crews and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) continue  to investigate the source of a diesel fuel sheen on the Hudson River in Haverstraw, N.Y.

The Rockland County Sheriff’s office notified the Coast Guard’s National Response Center Sunday of a discharge of diesel.

Coast Guard Sector New York pollution responders were dispatched along with DEC representatives to determine the source of the discharge and oversee clean-up efforts.

The source and estimated amount of discharge remains unknown at this time, but the sheen from initial reports has dissipated.  Boom has been deployed in the area to contain the sheen, and DEC has contracted a commercial clean up company to assist with cleanup efforts.

Coast Guard and DEC personnel are continuing to investigate the source of this sheen.

There are no concerns to navigation at this time.
