SUBJ:  ASIAN AMERICAN AND PACIFIC ISLANDER (AAPI) HERITAGE MONTH
1.  May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, a period during
which special recognition is accorded members of the AAPI community.  The
theme for this year’s observance is “Unite Our Vision by Working Together.”
This call for unity and inclusion is an extension of the 2017 theme, “Unite
Our Voices by Speaking Together.”
2.  Throughout U.S. history, Americans of Asian and Pacific Islander descent,
like many other immigrant groups, worked together to creatively respond to
challenges and hardships that led to breaking barriers and forging partnerships
to create opportunities once closed to these communities.  Maintaining close
relationships, trusting and depending on each other and sharing experiences has
often been the basis of success stories among AAPIs.  Their determination to
advance beyond expectation led them to apply for citizenship, open businesses,
seek political office, serve in the military and to make numerous significant
contributions to our Nation.
3.  Forty-three years ago, the strong desire to promote cultural diversity and
equal opportunity for AAPI members in the Federal and District of Columbia
governments led to the establishment of the Federal Asian Pacific American
Council (FAPAC).  Members of this affinity group work together to represent
civilian employees and military personnel while encouraging the participation
and advancement of AAPI members in the government workforce.  The Coast Guard
chapter of FAPAC was established three years ago to provide a unified voice
and serve as a conduit through which the interests, issues and representation
of AAPIs in government service would be addressed. Additionally, the affinity
group promotes partnerships with the public and private sectors in local
communities.
4.   Each year, the Coast Guard is honored to pay tribute to civilian and
military members of AAPI descent and celebrate the varied traditions which have
enriched the culture of our Service and our Nation.  All commands and units are
encouraged to sponsor special events and activities that highlight the
contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islanders in service to communities
nationwide.
