SUBJ:  DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY (DHS) CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER LIFE SAVING AWARD
1. The DHS Chief Medical Officer established the Life Saving Award in January
2015 to honor DHS employees whose direct, hands-on actions have saved a life.
2. It is my pleasure to announce that staff at the Coast Guard, Base Kodiak,
Rockmore-King Clinic have been awarded the DHS Chief Medical Officer Life Saving
Award for their heroic actions resulting in a life being saved.
3. During the lunch hour on January 18, 2018, a Coast Guard employee went to the
Rockmore-King Clinic complaining of difficulty breathing and tightness in his throat.
The employee’s symptoms began to deteriorate and the corpsman at the front desk
quickly recognized the situation as an immediate threat to life; without hesitation
he activated the clinic’s emergency response system and proceeded immediately with
administering life-saving treatment. Multiple clinic personnel assisted with the
response, ensuring the employee remained stable until he could be transferred to
the emergency room for additional evaluation and treatment. The employee made
a complete recovery.
