Update: Unified Command continues oil spill response near New Orleans

 

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard, Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinators Office, Gallagher Marine and response personnel continue cleanup efforts on the Mississippi River near New Orleans, Friday. 

Algiers and Canal Street Ferries have resumed operations. The waterway restriction between mile markers 101 to mile marker 91 remains in effect given ongoing cleanup activities in these areas.

“The intracoastal waterway between the Algiers Lock and Inner Harbor Navigation Canal is open,” said Capt. Wayne Arguin, commander, Coast Guard Sector New Orleans. “The transit through Algiers point is currently being evaluated.”

The Coast Guard is working with industry to test if vessel traffic impacts cleanup efforts. The results of the test will determine when the waterway can be reopened.

The Unified Command has deployed 121 people, 29 boats and six skimmers to remove oil from impacted waterways and shoreline.

Air monitoring continues along the impacted region, and air quality remains safe.

There have been no reports of impacted wildlife.
