SUBJ:  GOLD ANCIENT MARINER SELECTION
1. I am pleased to announce the selection of Captain (sel) Stephen
Matadobra as the 15th Gold (Officer) Ancient Mariner since the inception
of the program in 1978. CAPT(sel) Matadobra will assume the title of Gold
Ancient Mariner from VADM Fred M. Midgette, who will be retiring after
36 years of service.  The details for the relief ceremony will be announced
separately.
2. CAPT(sel) Matadobra is currently the Chief, Enforcement Branch (DRE),
Fifth Coast Guard District.  He has over 20 years of sea time while
serving aboard 13 Coast Guard cutters and was designated a Master
Cutterman in 2010. Notably, he served as Commanding Officer of Coast
Guard Cutters KUKUI (WLB 203), PAMLICO (WLIC 800), and Officer in
Charge of Coast Guard Cutter BAYBERRY (WLI 65400).
3. The Ancient Mariner title recognizes the officer and enlisted
person with the earliest designation as a permanent cutterman and
requires a minimum of ten years of sea time.  The award recipients
must personify and uphold the core values of honor, respect, and
devotion to duty, along with the professionalism and leadership
associated with long service at sea.

5. The proceedings of the selection board, including its deliberations
and criteria for selection, cannot be disclosed to any person who was
