The Revenue Cutter Harriet Lane fired across the bow of the merchant vessel Nashville when it attempted to enter Charleston Harbor without displaying the national flag.

The cutter Harriet Lane is a 270-foot medium endurance cutter homeported in Portsmouth, Virginia.
