Coast Guard rescues 3 from Vancouver side of Columbia River

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Coast Guard rescued three boaters, Saturday evening, after their boat started taking on water near the United Grain Facility near the Port of Vancouver, Washington.

A Station Portland boat crew aboard a 29-foot Response Boat – Small II pulled the three boaters, one male and two females all in their 40s, from the 19-foot boat and transported them to the Red Lion Hotel pier in Vancouver where the boaters were checked out by emergency medical services.

The Coast Guard boat crew was on a routine patrol when they came across the distressed boaters at 5:45 p.m. After pulling all three people to safety, the male boater jumped off the Coast Guard boat in an effort to rescue his boat, but the boat crew again rescued the man. At 6:24 p.m. all three boaters were safe on land. EMS reported no injuries or medical concerns.

The Coast Guard boat crew returned to check on the boat and found a Clark County Fire boat crew on scene trying to save the boat.  The boat did sink, but it is secured to some pilings and salvage plans will be made.
