Coast Guard rescues man from water near Cumberland Sound

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Coast Guard rescued a man from the water Friday near Cumberland Sound.

Rescued was 71-year-old Joe Gregory.

Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville Command Center watchstanders received notification at 1:45 p.m that an unmanned 30-foot cabin cruiser, Spartina, had drifted into a dredge vessel.

A Coast Guard Station Mayport 45-foot Response Boat – Medium crew and an Air Station Savannah MH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter crew launched at 2:24 p.m. to commence search efforts.

At 3:48 p.m., the RBM crew located Gregory near the north jetties of the St. Mary's River. A rescue swimmer was lowered to assist. Gregory was recovered from the water by the RBM crew and transferred to a Nassau County Sheriff's Office vessel.
