SUBJ:  SELECTION OF MASTER CHIEF PETTY OFFICER OF THE COAST GUARD (MCPOCG)
1. We are pleased to announce the selection of Command Master Chief Jason M. Vanderhaden as
the next Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard (MCPOCG). He will relieve
MCPOCG Steven W. Cantrell during a Change of Watch Ceremony on 17 May 2018 in Washington, DC.
2. CMC Vanderhaden enlisted in the Coast Guard in May 1988. Upon completion of basic
training, he reported to his first assignment at Station Short Beach in New York. From there
he went on to serve in an array of assignments which include Station Jones Beach, FS “A”
School, LORAN Station Iwo Jima, Air Station Clearwater, USCGC CHEYENNE, Air Station Humboldt
Bay, USCGC ACTIVE, Station Ponce de Leon Inlet, USCGC RELIANCE, and as an instructor at the
Chief Petty Officer Academy. He has held multiple Command Master Chief assignments which
include Base Honolulu, the Thirteenth Coast Guard District, and Coast Guard Pacific Area.
He assumed the duties as the Command Master Chief for the Deputy Commandant for Mission
Support (DCMS) in June 2016. CMC Vanderhaden is a graduate of Class 114 of the Coast Guard
Chief Petty Officer Academy, the National Defense University’s Keystone Command Senior
Enlisted Course, and other service-related schools. CMC Vanderhaden holds a Bachelor of
Science Degree from Excelsior College.
3. CMC Vanderhaden has demonstrated significant commitment to our Core Values of Honor,
Respect and Devotion to Duty by his outstanding performance during his 30-year career.
4. A number of outstanding Master Chiefs with diverse backgrounds applied for this
important and prestigious position. We would like to commend them for their past service,
dedication to the Coast Guard, and thank them for their willingness to serve in this position.
