SUBJ: 2017 GEICO MILITARY SERVICE AWARD WINNER
A. COMDT COGARD WASHINGTON DC 01035 OCT 17/ALCOAST 305/17
1. As announced in REF (A), GEICO annually pays tribute to an active duty
service member from each branch of the armed services, and one drilling
reserve enlisted member from all the services.
The award recognizes achievements or contributions in the following categories:
   A. Drug and alcohol abuse prevention,
   B. Fire prevention and fire safety, and
   C. Traffic safety and accident prevention.
2. The 2017 GEICO Military Service Award winner for the Coast Guard is
Damage Controlman First Class Petty Officer Steven Mensen. Petty Officer Mensen
is recognized for his contributions and achievements in Fire Safety and Fire
Prevention. Petty Officer Mensen performs comprehensive fire system inspections
for Base New Orleans & multiple sub-units spanning the Gulf Coast and the
Midwestern states. In all, Petty Officer Mensen is responsible for over 200,000
square feet of facilities. Petty Officer Mensen’s extensive knowledge of fire
protection and life safety systems has resulted in prompt corrective actions.
While performing an internal environmental compliance audit at a unit,
he identified a trouble alarm in the fire system, and applied his technical,
risk management, and safety expertise to trace the electrical drawings in two hours.
He found the issue to be a strobe beacon hundreds of feet away on a pier. In the past,
multiple contractors had attempted to fix the problem without succcess. Petty Officer
Mensen received high praise from the unit’s command on his outstanding knowledge and
valuable insight in correcting the problem.
3. Petty Officer Mensen will be recognized by GEICO at an awards ceremony
on 30 April 2018, in Washington, DC.
4. I commend Petty Officer Mensen for his achievements and contributions over
and above his assigned duties. I applaud his command for recognizing his efforts
and taking the time to nominate him for this award. I encourage all Commanding
Officers and Officers-in-Charge to consider submitting nominations for the
2018 GEICO Military Service Award during the upcoming award nomination cycle.
