Coast Guard responds to person in the water

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard and a good Samaritan rescued a man who fell out of a boat near Panama City, Florida, Saturday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Mobile received a distress call over channel 16 VHF at 1:23 p.m.

Watchstanders directed the launch of two response boat crews from Coast Guard Station Panama City and an HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane crew from Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile, Alabama, to search for distress.

At 1:45 p.m. watchstanders received a call from a person aboard a good Samaritan vessel, Yellow Seahunt, who reported a person had fallen off of their sailboat near Panama City.

At 2:05 p.m. one of the Coast Guard boat crews arrived on scene, where the Yellow Seahunt had already recovered the person from the water.

The boatcrew escorted the Yellow Seahunt to St. Andrews State Park and the person who fell overboard was taken to awaiting emergency medical services.

The boatcrew arrived back at the sailing vessel and confirmed with a woman aboard the vessel that she made the distress call.

The boatcrew towed the sailing vessel to an anchorage area near St. Andrews State Park and transported the woman to St. Andrews Marina.
