Coast Guard rescues man washed out to sea near Salt Point State Park

SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard rescued a fisherman who became washed into the surf near Salt Point State Park near Jenner, Saturday morning.

A good Samaritan contacted Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders at approximately 8:20 a.m., reporting that a 35-year-old man was hit by a wave while fishing in the surf.

The man was reportedly washed about 500 feet offshore and having trouble swimming.

Sector San Francisco watchstanders dispatched a Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew and a Coast Guard Station Bodega Bay 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew to assist.

California Highway patrol, Sonoma County Life Guards, Timber Cove Fire Department and Salt Creek State Park Rangers also responded.

The helicopter crew arrived on scene, hoisted the man and transferred him to emergency medical services personnel waiting on shore.

"Anytime someone is fishing, hiking or spending time along the coast, it's important to always have safety in mind," said Petty Officer 1st Class Travis Addison, an operations specialist at Sector San Francisco. "The ocean and surf can be unpredictable, so it's important to stay aware of your surroundings and to wear a life jacket if you're going to be in or on the water."
