Coast Guard monitors salvage of derailed train cars in Susquehanna River

BALTIMORE — The Coast Guard continues to monitor and oversee salvage efforts Monday, after rail cars derailed off the Amtrak Susquehanna River Bridge in Havre De Grace, Friday.

Coast Guard Sector Maryland-National Capital Region response personnel became aware of the incident after a National Response Center report Friday at 9:28 p.m. They determined that there were a total of four empty railcars in the water and no reported injuries.

CSX Transportation is working to remove the sunken railcars from the river. Two railcars were removed on Saturday and the other two were located and marked on Sunday.

The railcars are scheduled to be rigged for removal during the week and removed Friday.

The Coast Guard is issuing Safety Marine Information Broadcasts to reflect the markings of the two sunken railcars.
