1. This ACN updates the Coast Guard color vision testing standards outlined in
REFs (A) to (D).
2. Since the Farnsworth Lantern (FALANT) is no longer being manufactured, its
use is being discontinued. The Coast Guard will align with the Navy color vision
testing standards outlined in REFs (E) and (F). The standards will be more
stringent for those Coast Guard personnel requiring color vision testing.
3. As per REF (E), the passing score for Pseudo-Isochromatic Plates (PIP) for aviation
personnel is 12/14 correctly identified red/green numerical test plates. As per
REF (F), the passing score for non-aviation personnel required to have color vision
testing is 10/14 correctly identified red/green numerical test plates.
4. Computerized Color Vision Tests (CCVT) can only be used for aviation personnel.
For non-aviation personnel required to have color vision testing that do not pass the
PIP test, there is no alternate test.
5. For aviation, as per REF (E), CCVT may be either used as a primary test of color
vision or as a backup test for PIP test failures. Directions for CCVT administration
and passing criteria are delineated in REF (E). Computer printout grade sheets from
the CCVT will be submitted with the physical exam to the Reviewing Officer/Approving
Authority and also placed into the health record. For all Flight Duty Medical Exams
(FDMEs), the computer printout grade sheets will be uploaded into AERO.
6. These changes will be reflected in future updates of REFs (A) to (D) and will be
released within the next year of this ACN.
