SAN JUAN -- Hal Fravel, Environmental Unit Leader, and Matt Bissell, Regional Response Officer, both with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the interagency ESF-10 Hurricane Maria Response, conduct environmental assessments for impacted vessels in La Parguera, Puerto Rico, Feb. 12, 2018. Environmental assessments are done in advance of boat removal operations in order to minimize damage to natural resources, plants, and wildlife.

To date, ESF-10 response teams have completed the following in their effort to reduce the potential environmental impact on Puerto Rico’s natural resources:

  • Assessed 377 total sunken or beached vessels
  • 318 vessels mitigated and/or removed from the environment; remaining 59 are current targets for removal
  • Contacted 96 percent of identified vessel owners
  • Mitigated 37 pollution incidents
  • Removed 18,150 gallons of oily water
