Coast Guard assists sailboat taking on water in Alligator River, NC

WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Coast Guard assisted a man whose sailboat was taking on water near Columbia, North Carolina, Sunday evening.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Station Elizabeth City were notified at about 5:15 p.m. of a boat taking on water southeast of Columbia in the Alligator River.

A crew from Station Elizabeth City trailered a 29-foot Response Boat-Small (RBS) and launched at Alligator River Marina in Columbia to assist the man.

The crew arrived on scene just south of the Alligator River Bridge and towed the man's sailboat to the Alligator River Marina.

"Familiarizing yourself with your vessel and knowing all the required safety equipment is extremely important," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Christopher Daniels, crew member during the case. "Always make sure you have more than one way to call for help when on the water."
