SUBJ:  2018 STUDENT ART CONTEST SOLICITATION
1.  “Better Shipping for a Better Future” is the theme for the 2018 Student Art
Contest sponsored by the U.S. Coast Guard, the North American Marine Environment
Protection Association (NAMEPA), and the Inter-American Committee on Ports of the
Organization of American States (CIP-OAS). The annual contest offers an opportunity
for youth across the Americas (North America, Central America, South America and
the Caribbean) to display their artistic talents as they create original posters
illustrating the maritime-related theme. This year’s theme aligns with that of the
International Maritime Organization (IMO) World Maritime Day.
2.  Maritime shipping has existed for thousands of years and, over time, has evolved
as one of the most environmentally friendly and safest way to transport goods around
the world. Student participants in the art contest are asked to submit an original
poster depicting creative ideas for ways shipping can make the future better for
people and the marine environment. All students, including dependents of CG
members, in grades K-12 are eligible to participate in the contest. Submissions
must be made online not later than 30 March 2018. Contest guidelines and helpful
links may be accessed on the CG Civil Rights Directorate website at
https://www.uscg.mil/Resources/Civil-Rights/Civil-Rights-Awards/.
3.  Twelve finalists, six from grades K-5 and six from grades 6-12, will be chosen
from the entries. All finalists will be required to submit their original artwork
when notified of their selection. The winning artwork will be retained and
featured on the USCG, NAMEPA and CIP-OAS websites as well as on a twelve month
Better Shipping for a Better Future-themed calendar. The calendar will be
printed in English and Spanish.
4.  Finalists will receive a certificate and a calendar with the artwork of all
twelve winners. Two grand prize winning artists (one from each grade category)
will receive a 100 dollar cash prize and Coast Guard-themed items. The grand prize
winners and finalists will be announced via ALCOAST and on the NAMEPA website.
5.  CG Partnership in Education (PIE) Coordinators and volunteers are asked to
encourage student participation at local PIE schools. CG personnel are encouraged
to promote participation by all students.
6.  The POC for additional information is Ms. Gwendolyn White, USCG Partnership in
