BOSTON — The Coast Guard and the Buzzards Bay Task Force are searching for a possible mariner in distress Wednesday night after Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England watchstanders heard a mayday call over the radio.

At around 8:31 p.m a mumbled male voice issued the mayday call. Watchstanders responded to the call but were unable to establish communications. The call was repeated at around 8:53 p.m. with the
same results.

The exact location, nature of distress, description of the vessel, and number of people aboard the vessel are all unknown.

Coast Guard Cutter Hammerhead and a 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew from Station Menemsha are searching in Buzzards Bay.

Search crews plan to remain on scene through the night.
