Coast Guard rescues woman in Juneau, Alaska

JUNEAU, Alaska -- A Coast Guard Station Juneau boatcrew rescued a woman Tuesday evening from the Gastineau Channel near the Taku Fisheries pier.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Juneau received a 911 relay at 8:40 p.m. Tuesday that a 27-year-old female had reportedly jumped into the water at the cruise ship terminal. A family member threw a life ring to the woman, who began to swim back toward the terminal but was having difficulty grabbing the life ring.

A Station Juneau 25-foot Response Boat-Small crew located the woman clutching the life ring. The boatcrew delivered her to a Capitol City Fire/Rescue crew waiting at Station Juneau where she was evaluated for medical concerns.

“We were able to locate her with the help of people on the pier using their phones as flashlights,” said Petty Officer 2^nd Class Nancy Emery, Station Juneau 25-foot RB-S crew member. “The prompt action by those good Samaritans helped us find her before the threat of drowning could occur.”

Weather on scene was calm and clear with light and variable winds and a water temperature of 39 degrees Fahrenheit.
