Coast Guard rescues two stranded boaters near Richmond Marina

SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard rescued two boaters stranded on a piling near Richmond Marina, Tuesday evening.

At approximately 7:30 p.m., the boaters contacted Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders reporting that they became stranded on a piling after their fishing boat sank.

Sector San Francisco watchstanders dispatched a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew from Coast Guard Station San Francisco to the scene.

The boat crew arrived on scene, transferred the stranded mariners from the piling to the Coast Guard vessel and transported them to Brickyard Cove Marina in Richmond with no reported injuries.

"The boaters in this case were fishing from a piling when their boat sank," said Lt. Cmdr. Jason Berger, a Sector San Francisco command duty officer. "They wisely decided to call the Coast Guard instead of attempting to swim to shore in the cold water of the bay. Boaters should be aware that water can cool a person's core body temperature 25 times faster than air at the same temperature. When a dangerous situation arises on the water, more often than not there won't be a piling or other structure to climb onto, making it essential to always wear life jackets while underway."
