Coast Guard, locals rescue mudslide victims in Santa Barbara County

SAN PEDRO, Calif. — The Coast Guard rescued and medevaced several mudslide victims in Santa Barbara County area, Tuesday morning.

Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach watchstanders dispatched two helicopter crews from Forward Operating Base Point Mugu and a crew from Coast Guard Sector San Diego to assist Santa Barbara County and local first responder agencies with rescue efforts for the mudslides in Santa Barbara, Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria.

At approximately 6:15 a.m., an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Forward Operating Base Point Mugu medevaced two burn victims from a reported home explosion who were later transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

At approximately 9:56 a.m., an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew conducted a rooftop rescue, saving two people and a dog in Carpinteria.

At approximately 11:30 a.m., an MH-60 Jayhawk crew from Coast Guard Air Station San Diego conducted a rooftop rescue, saving five people and two dogs in the Carpinteria area.

At approximately 11:45 a.m., the crew of an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter medevaced two adults with reported broken limbs to EMS at Santa Barbara Airport.

The Coast Guard encourages the public within the affected areas to:

  • Shelter-in-place or go to high ground and stay off the roads.
  • Take protective actions to stay safe. Avoid downed power lines and trees, do not try to leave and do not drive across flowing water or mud.
  • Stay off the roads to allow emergency operations to take place in areas impacted by the storm and mudslides.
  • Stay informed through the County of Santa Barbara’s social media, website and information line for the latest on road closures, weather, transportation assistance and evacuation areas.
