Coast Guard assists 3 people on disabled vessels in South Florida

MIAMI — The Coast Guard assisted three people from two different disabled vessels early Wednesday morning in South Florida.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Miami received a notification from Palm Beach Fire Rescue at approximately 3:15 a.m. of a disabled 20-foot boat with one person aboard at the entrance to Lake Worth Inlet. The watchstanders directed the launch of a Coast Guard Station Lake Worth Inlet 33-foot Special Purpose Craft—Law Enforcement boatcrew and towed the vessel to Phil Foster Park with no further incidents.

In addition, Sector Miami watchstanders received another notification at approximately 4:30 a.m. of a disabled 34-foot boat with two people aboard adrift in the shipping lane at Port Everglades.The watchstanders directed the launch of a Station Fort Lauderdale 45-foot Response Boat—Medium boatcrew and towed the vessel to the 15th Street Boat Ramp with no further incidents.

“We recommend all mariners in distress contact the Coast Guard via VHF-FM channel 16 radio,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class Brandon Murray, spokesman for Coast Guard 7th District. "It is also recommended mariners ensure they have the proper equipment aboard. Emergency equipment can consist of a fire extinguisher, flares, signaling devices, spare parts and other items."
