3 rescued after boat sinks near La Jolla

SAN DIEGO – Three boaters were rescued after their vessel sank off the coast of La Jolla, California, Saturday.

At approximately 8 a.m., Saturday, the crew of a 32-foot recreational vessel contacted watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector San Diego’s Joint Harbor Operations Center via radio and reported that their vessel was taking on water approximately 40 miles west of La Jolla. An Emergency Position-Indicating Radio beacon alert was also received from the vessel.

Watchstanders issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast requesting assistance from any mariners in the area.

A Coast Guard Sector San Diego MH-60T Jayhawk rescue helicopter crew was launched and the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Petrel was diverted to assist.

At approximately 8:30 a.m., a Navy vessel operating in the vicinity responded to the UMIB and rescued all three boaters.

All three persons were wearing life jackets.

The survivors were then transferred to the cutter Petrel and taken to Dana Point, California.

There were no reported injuries.

The vessel completely sank.

The Coast Guard Cutter Petrel is an 87-foot patrol boat homeported in San Diego.
