PORTSMOUTH, Va. -- Vice Adm. Karl Schultz, commander, Coast Guard Atlantic Area and Rear Adm. Erroll M. Brown, Coast Guard retired, spoke during a Veterans Day event at Norfolk State University Thursday.

During the event members of the university preformed a jazz ensemble, gave a brief excerpt on the history of Veterans Day, thanked military members active and retied for their service, and honored those who have passed.

Brown highlighted the Promise of Possibilities to the NSU student body in his speech.  He shared his personal story of his military service and the direction it gave him in life, while Schultz opened the doors to college students to seek opportunities the military provides. Both men shared the true meaning of what Veterans Day means to them, and encouraged the university to reflect this Saturday.

"It was an honor to participate alongside my friend and former Coast Guard colleague, Rear Adm. Erroll Brown, in today's Norfolk State University Veteran's Day program, honoring our nation's veterans – whose service has, and continues, through stories of untold courage, sacrifice and heroism, support the ideals of our great nation," said Schultz.

"The full support and participation of NSU's leadership, exceptional musical ensembles, and impressive Army/Navy ROTC students, truly enriched the dignified program that was highlighted by Admiral Brown's inspirational words about what shaped him as a leader and regarding the challenges and opportunities for America's veterans in the 21st century workplace," Schultz added.   "I am truly energized about our burgeoning Coast Guard College Student Pre-commissioning Initiative partnership with NSU."

Norfolk State University is a strong supporter for all military services. The Coast Guard is thankful for all that Norfolk State University does for our service members and families. Norfolk State University has a strong ROTC program, with Army and Navy.  Just this spring, Norfolk State University entered a partnership with Coast Guard where University leaders and Coast Guard will work together to promote and increase diversity with our College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (Scholarship Program) (CSPI).
