NEW YORK - The Coast Guard provided security and a starting point for the 2017 TCS New York City Marathon on Staten Island, New York, Sunday.

Several Coast Guard units provided assistance with security, both on and off the water near Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island.

Members from Maritime Safety and Security Team New York, Coast Guard Police, Sector New York, and Coast Guard Auxiliary provided security around the marathon start area for several hours while runners lined up in their starting corrals.

Crewmembers from Station New York patrolled in small boats to assist with maritime security below the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, while an aircrew from Air Station Atlantic City supported from the air.

Coast Guard Cutter Campbell, a 270-foot Medium Endurance Cutter homeported at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, also assisted in enforcing a security zone near the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

The New York City Marathon is the largest marathon in the world with over 50,000 runners competing. It is one of the premier races and one of the six world marathon majors.
