SUBJ:  NATIONAL NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE MONTH
1.  November 1st marks the beginning of National Native American Heritage Month,
a period during which the rich history, traditions and culture of Americans of
Indian heritage are spotlighted.  We gratefully acknowledge many of the
accomplishments of the original environmental stewards of our habitat, wildlife
and natural resources while observing this year's theme: “Standing Together.”
2.  As we celebrate the vibrant and diverse cultures of tribal nations across
North America, we must remember the lessons of the past and present that affirm
the importance of standing together to strengthen our communities and our Nation.
The legacy of service of these proud Americans is evident in urban and rural
enclaves around the country and throughout the U.S. military. The history of
Native American Coast Guard service dates back to 1877 at the Life-Saving
Station at Neah Bay, Washington on the Makah Reservation. Currently, 1,532 Coast
Guard military members and civilian employees are of American Indian or Alaska
Native heritage.
3.  Throughout American history, tribal nations have embraced the ideal
of commitment to service and stewardship of our Nation continuing on a path
toward boundless potential.  With this philosophy in mind, standing together
we can build bridges of understanding and respect for all peoples and create a
legacy of diversity and inclusion.
4.  All Coast Guard commands and units are encouraged to observe National
Native American Heritage Month with appropriate programs, ceremonies and
activities that highlight the contributions that American Indians and Alaska Natives
have made to our Service and to our Nation.
