Coast Guard prepares for Tropical Storm Nate

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard is strategically positioning response assets and personnel prior to the arrival of Tropical Storm Nate to ensure rapid deployment of resources as soon as it is safe to operate and respond.

Preparedness of personnel and assets, and the maritime and port community at large are critical to successful post-storm recovery.

Assets currently pre-staged include:

  • 8 shallow-water boats in New Orleans, Louisiana
  • 6 shallow-water boats in Hammond, Louisiana
  • 15 shallow-water boats in Jackson, Mississippi
  • 5 rotary-wing aircraft at Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans
  • 4 fixed-wing aircraft at Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile
  • 13 rotary-wing aircraft at Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile
  • 3 rotary-wing aircraft at Coast Guard Air Station Houston
  • 3 rotary-wing aircraft at Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi
  • 2 fixed-wing aircraft at Coast Guard Air Station Corpus Christi

The Coast Guard is repositioning small boats to keep them safe during the storm in order for them to quickly respond as soon as it is safe to do so.

During the height of the storm, rescue assistance may be unavailable. Boaters and citizens should heed storm warnings, take early action to stay safe, and protect themselves and their families.

The public should continue to follow safety information provided by local, state and federal government agencies.
