ALAMEDA, Calif. — The Coast Guard is scheduled to conduct a law enforcement training exercise Tuesday of the Enhanced Maritime Safety and Security Team's capabilities in San Francisco Bay.

The exercise is open to members of the media and will occur north of Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay.

The Enhanced MSST is a tactical unit that specializes in maritime counter terrorism and high risk law enforcement.  Personnel are trained to board and secure vessels, including those held by terrorists holding hostages.  Enhanced MSST personnel provide a unique and scalable maritime counterterrorism and law enforcement capability against vessels and persons posing a threat in the maritime domain.

Who: Coast Guard Enhanced Maritime Safety and Security Team

What: Exercise of the team's capabilities, including an airborne and boat assault of a ferry.  Media can expect to capture Coast Guard members and canine units boarding the ferry by boat and helicopter, searching the ferry for simulated terrorist threats, mitigating a medical scenario and countering a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear (CBRNE) event.  Coast Guard members will be available for on-camera interviews to discuss the team's missions and the Coast Guard's roles and responsibilities in safeguarding bay-area ports and waterways.

When: Members of the media will embark the ferry at 12:30 p.m. and will return to the pier at 4:30 p.m.

Where: Members of the media will embark the San Francisco Spirit at Pier 3 in San Francisco, and the exercise will be conducted north of Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay.
