SUBJ:  DEATH OF COAST GUARD'S FIFTH MCPOCG
1. It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of Master Chief Petty
Officer of the Coast Guard Allen W. Thiele, USCG (Retired), who passed away
on Saturday, September 23, 2017.
2. MCPOCG Thiele served as the fifth Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast
Guard from 1986 to 1990. He enlisted in the Coast Guard on November 25,
1958. During his career, he served afloat on Coast Guard Cutters RARITAN,
MESQUITE, and OWASCO, and as the Officer in Charge of Cutters WYACONDA and
TERN. His ashore assignments included several Great Lakes units in the Ninth
Coast Guard District including Light Station Algoma, WI, Recruiting Office
Milwaukee, WI, and as Officer in Charge of Boating Safety Detachment at Two
Rivers, WI. In Hawaii, he served as the Executive Petty Officer at LORAN
Station Kauai, and in July of 1979, MCPOCG Thiele was selected as the
Command Enlisted Advisor for the Fourteenth Coast Guard District in
Honolulu.
3. During his tenure as the fifth MCPOCG, the Coast Guard was restructured,
reshaped, and resized.  During this formative time, MCPOCG Thiele was a
stalwart in promoting the responsibilities of the men and women of the Coast
Guard to hold fast to and uphold our motto of "Semper Paratus."  His staunch
advocacy of the Chief Petty Officer's Academy has enabled the frontline of
the Coast Guard's leadership team, The Chief's Mess, to reach higher as
captured in the motto "Altus Tendo" at this premier leadership development
institution at Training Center Petaluma.
4. Information regarding the funeral and memorial plans, half-masting of the
National Ensign, and expressions of sympathy given in memory of MCPOCG
Thiele, will be sent via separate message.
5. Admiral Paul F. Zukunft, Commandant, and MCPOCG Steven W. Cantrell,
Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard, send.
6. Internet release authorized.
