Coast Guard deploys flood punts to assist with Hurricane Irma response
ST. LOUIS -- Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River is deploying three flood punt teams to assist with Hurricane Irma responses, Friday.
The flood punt teams will stage in Mobile, Ala., and remain ready to respond to areas affected by the hurricane. The flood punts are small watercraft that can operate in shallow flooded areas.
The Coast Guard Seventh District Office located in Miami, Fla., is temporarily relocating its personnel to St. Louis to monitor and manage the incident from a safe location.
“The Coast Guard in St. Louis played a crucial role in the response to Hurricane Harvey and will do so again for Hurricane Irma,” explained Capt. Scott Stoermer, commander, Sector Upper Mississippi River. “We stand ready to assist any and all those in need in the wake of this natural disaster.”
