NEW YORK – Officials from the borough of Staten Island along with members from Coast Guard Sector New York renamed a portion of Bay Street to 'U.S. Coast Guard Way' on Sept. 6, 2017.

The ceremony was held in recognition for the more than 20-years that both Sector New York and Station New York have been attached to Staten Island.

“We live here, our children go to school here, simply put, Staten Island is our home and the residents are our family,” said Lt. Cmdr. Lily Andrews, chief of enforcement, Sector New York, and master of ceremonies for the day. “This is a unique form of recognition. One that affirms our strong bond between the Coast Guard and Staten Island.”

Sector New York, is the largest Coast Guard operational field command on the East Coast. The main staff is located at historic Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island. The sector has several cutters and three small boat stations within its area of responsibility.

Coast Guard members based on Staten Island help enforce several of the services’ statutory missions including, maritime safety, maritime security, maritime mobility, protection of natural resources, and national defense.

“It’s incredible the amount of support the Coast Guard receives here on Staten Island,” said Capt. Michael Day, commander Sector New York. “Without a doubt, this is one of the most patriotic places I have ever been stationed.”
