Good Samaritan rescues 6 from vessel fire west of Point Loma
SAN DIEGO — A good Samaritan crew rescued six fishermen from a vessel fire approximately 10 miles west of Point Loma, Saturday.
At approximately 8:30 a.m., Saturday, the crew of the 40-foot sport-fishing vessel Reel Viking contacted Coast Guard Sector San Diego Joint Harbor Operations Center watchstanders reporting their vessel was on fire and they were in need of assistance.
The Coast Guard transmitted an urgent marine information broadcast and directed the launch of a Coast Guard Station San Diego 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crew to assist. Additionally, a San Diego Lifeguard fire boat crew also launched.
Within minutes, the crew of the sport-fishing vessel Passport responded to the UMIB and rescued all six persons from the Reel Viking. The San Diego Lifeguard crew arrived on scene and attempted to extinguish the fire.
All rescued fishermen were transferred aboard the Coast Guard response boat, and then transported to Dana Landing, in San Diego, at approximately 10:30 a.m.
There were no reported injuries.
The Reel Viking was reported to have sunk and was unrecoverable.
