Coast Guard medevacs man from ATV crash on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska

JUNEAU, Alaska — A MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard forward operating location Kotzebue rescued a man who crashed his ATV on St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, at 3:32 a.m., Friday.

The helicopter crew arrived on scene, brought the man aboard, and transported him to Nome, Alaska, where local emergency medical services personnel were waiting.

Coast Guard Seventeenth District Command Center watchstanders received a request from Savoonga Clinic via the Alaska State Troopers for a 76-year-old suffering from neck and head injuries after crashing his ATV approximately 40 miles east of Savoonga, Alaska. Watchstanders contacted Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak personnel who quickly organized the launch of a helicopter crew from FOL Kotzebue.

“Cases like this, in a remote location with no medically trained personnel nearby, shows the importance of our FOL’s who are able to get on scene to render assistance and assess how bad the injuries might be,” said Chief Petty Officer Mistique Anderson, District 17 watchstander. “Our crews stay ready to respond 24/7 and fortunately were able to get this man safely to a higher level of care.”
