Update: Coast Guard suspends search for missing person

NEW ORLEANS - The Coast Guard suspended its search Saturday for a missing man who was last seen aboard a fishing vessel approximately 30 miles southwest of Port Fourchon, Louisiana.

The Coast Guard searched a total of 2,630 square nautical miles of the Gulf of Mexico over the course of nearly 60 hours for Roy Kerwood.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of the missing individual," said Lt. Cmdr. Emile Cochet, a Coast Guard search and rescue mission coordinator at Coast Guard Sector New Orleans. "The decision to suspend a search is never easy and is something that is done with great care and deliberation. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts and an extensive search, our crews were unable to locate the man."

Involved in the search were:

• MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crews from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans
• HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane crews from Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile, Alabama
• 45-foot Response Boat-Medium crews from Coast Guard Station Grand Isle, Louisiana
• Coast Guard Cutter Skipjack from Abbeville, Louisiana

Watchstanders at Sector New Orleans received a report at approximately 8 a.m. on Thursday that a man had gone missing aboard the fishing vessel How You Doing 2 and was last seen by crew members at 4 a.m. that morning.
