NEW YORK — Coast Guard crews are responding to an oil tanker that ran aground in the Ambrose Channel, Friday evening.

At approximately 5:15 p.m., the Panamanian-flag vessel, Kamome Victoria, notified the Coast Guard that it had run aground while transiting outbound approximately five miles south of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge.

The vessel is carrying 373,000 gallons of fuel. There is no known pollution or injuries at this time. The structural integrity of the vessel has been initially assessed, and no breach has been located.

Coast Guard Sector New York responders are on scene investigating the cause of the grounding and assessing a salvage plan. A broadcast notice to mariners is in place advising mariners to transit the area with caution.

The cause of the incident is under investigation. Drug and alcohol tests will be performed.
