UPDATE: Unified Command scales down multiagency response to fishing vessel Akutan
UNALASKA, Alaska — The Unified Command, in response to the disabled fishing vessel Akutan in Captains Bay, has mitigated the imminent and substantial threat of pollution in Unalaska, Wednesday.
Responders removed 15,800 gallons of oil-water mixture and sludge from the engine room bilge and slop tanks. As a result, the U.S. Coast Guard, Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and the City of Unalaska have agreed to suspend operations.
"The Unified Command will continue to monitor the situation," said Capt. Sean MacKenzie, Federal On-Scene Coordinator. "Though we have completed operations aboard the Akutan, the Unified Command will remain in close coordination to monitor the situation and ensure the vessel no longer poses an environmental threat."
