Training exercises in Duluth to begin Monday

SUPERIOR, Wisc., — The U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Duluth is scheduled to conduct training exercises to test the Captain of the Port, Duluth, area maritime security plan and area contingency plan within the port of Duluth-Superior, Monday.

Multiple federal, state, and local agencies as well as industry stakeholders will test the plans abilities to respond to a maritime security posture increase as well as a pollution incident.

The Coast Guard will lead the security exercise followed by a spill response exercise led by Calumet Superior, LLC with multiple federal, state, and local assisting agencies.

During the exercises there will be a maritime security level increase at maritime facilities located within the port as well as the northern shore of Lake Superior. During the MARSEC portion of the exercise, the public may see increased security measures implemented at maritime facilities.

During the spill response exercise there will be deployment of oil containment boom and other spill response resources near the Calumet fueling facility in Duluth harbor.

The U.S. Coast Guard reminds the public that should they see an increased presence of Coast Guard personnel and additional security, not to be alarmed and that the increased security is a result of these training exercises.

If there are any questions or concerns during the exercise, please contact the Coast Guard at (906) 635-3236.
