SEATTLE – A Coast Guard boarding team discovered amphetamines, prescription pills and cash on a recreational vessel during a routine safety boarding of a boat near Anacortes, Wednesday evening.

The Coast Guard Station Bellingham boarding team detained the two people on board and towed the 32-foot U.S.-flagged cabin cruiser to Anacortes where officers from the Skagit County Drug Task Force took custody of the drugs, cash and subjects.

The Station Bellingham boarding team reported the boarding at 4:30 p.m., and during the boarding the Coast Guard boarding officer discovered what appeared to be a black, tar-like substance. Further investigation yielded a chemical that tested positive for amphetamines and a significant distributable amount of prescription pills and cash.

The Coast Guard is the lead federal agency for drug interdiction on the high seas and the territorial waters of the U.S. Our crews are constantly on the lookout for potentially illicit activities taking place in the maritime environment. When an issue is identified, our personnel will investigate and detain as needed as well as work with local law enforcement agencies as appropriate.
