1. The Federal Asian Pacific American Council – US Coast Guard (FAPAC-USCG),
in collaboration with FAPAC and the Asian Pacific American Institute of Congressional
Studies (APAICS), is hosting a leadership symposium on 15 September 2017 at the
Department of Transportation in Washington, DC. This year’s theme, “Cultivating Grit,” is
based on Dr. Angela Duckworth’s research. According to her research, “grit” is considered
among the most important predictors of success and everyone can increase his/her own inner
grit. The purpose of this conference is to focus on developing the four facets of “grit”
in present and future leaders. A full agenda has been developed to create an engaging
discussion forum and speaker spotlights.
2. IAW REF (A), FAPAC-USCG is the Coast Guard coordinator for the event and has
responsibility to account for all attendance and overall costs to DHS. To request
attendance, interested members shall register on the FAPAC website at https://fapac.org.
For those within the National Capital Region, permissive orders are also authorized
IAW CH 2.a.10. of REF (B). All travel will be funded by attendees local unit.
3. Commanding officers/OICs are strongly encouraged to promote and support opportunities
for professional development. 
4. DHS requires a post-conference report 30 days after the event. To comply, all travelers
must submit a copy of their TDY settlement to LT Hermie Mendoza via email to
Hermie.P.Mendoza@uscg.mil no later than 13 October 2017.
5. Conference attendance information:
    A. Conference fee is $15 for FAPAC members or $20 for non-FAPAC members.
    B. Conference is open to military and civilians with a CAC / PIV.
    C. Uniform for attendees is tropical long for military attendees and business causal
for civilians.
    D. Attendees are responsible for making their own registration, travel, and lodging
accommodations.
6. The primary FAPAC-USCG POC is LT Hermie Mendoza, Hermie.Mendoza@fapacuscg.org. In the
National Capital Region, FAPAC-USCG POCs are LT John Santorum, John.Santorum@fapacuscg.org,
