Coast Guard rescues boater after being ejected in San Diego Bay

 

SAN DIEGO – A Coast Guard Station San Diego crew rescued a man after he was ejected from a dinghy in San Diego Bay, Saturday.

At approximately 1:45 p.m., Saturday, watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector San Diego received a call from a good Samaritan aboard a sailboat who witnessed an out of control unmanned motorized dinghy operating in the bay.

A Coast Guard Station San Diego 45-foot response boat-medium crew was underway nearby and immediately responded to the scene.

Upon arrival, the crew found a man in the water with a severe arm injury. The crew rescued and safely transported him to awaiting EMS at 5^th Avenue Landing, in San Diego.

A good Samaritan aboard a 20-foot pleasure craft attempted to stop the out-of-control dingy. San Diego Harbor Police arrived on scene and took positive control of the dinghy.

“The importance of having good relationships with our partners is magnified immensely in a case like this,” said Cdr. Rob Potter, chief of response, Sector San Diego. "This rescue was predicated on the quick thinking and selfless actions from our crews, partnering agencies, and courageous good Samaritans. We commend them all for their heroic actions to help this person in need."

Harbor Police are investigating the cause of the incident.
