Coast Guard medevacs 62-year-old fisherman off Chincoteague, VA

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard medevaced a 62-year-old man from a fishing boat about 13 miles east of Chincoteague, Virginia, Tuesday.

Watchstanders in the Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads Command Center in Portsmouth were notified via radio at 3:52 p.m. that a man was experiencing heat-related injuries aboard the fishing vessel Windmill Point.

A 47-foot Motor Life Boat crew from Station Chincoteague launched at approximately 4:35 p.m. and arrived on scene by about 5:00 p.m.

The crew brought the fisherman aboard the MLB and transported him to the station, arriving at 5:38 p.m. Chincoteague EMS personnel then brought the man to Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Onley, Virginia.

“We encourage all mariners to be extra vigilant about their own health when boating in the heat,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Aaron Hofmeister, coxswain for the case. “The fact that the fishing vessel crew called for help right away over Channel 16 allowed us to deliver the fisherman to higher medical care much faster than if they had waited.”
