Coast Guard, partner agencies rescue man from water near Edgemere, Md.

 

BALTIMORE — The Coast Guard and its partner agencies rescued a man from the water Friday near North Point State Park.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Maryland-National Capital Region received a report from Maryland Natural Resources Police at approximately 4 p.m. stating a 25-foot sailing vessel was found south of Pleasure Island on Sparrow’s Point beached with its sails rigged, a wallet and coolers on board, and lifejackets floating just off shore.

Sector Maryland-NCR issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium boat crew from Coast Guard Station Curtis Bay. MNRP, Baltimore County Police Department, Anne Arundel County Police Department and Baltimore City Marine Police also launched. TowBoat US responded to the UMIB and assisted with the search.

TowBoat US located the man standing in approximately four feet of water waving his arms on the northern side of North Point State Park at approximately 7:30 p.m. The man said he had fallen overboard about 7-8 hours prior to being rescued and began swimming.

The man was transferred to the RB-M and taken to Bowley’s Quarter Marina where EMS was waiting.

“A rescue like this highlights the importance of unity of search efforts and the relationships we have with not only our local, state and federal partners, but with the commercial salvage companies as well,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Ian McGoohan, an operations unit controller at the Sector Maryland-NCR command center.
