Coast Guard rescues 2 adults, 2 children from capsized boat near South Padre Island, Texas

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A Coast Guard crew and police officers pulled four people from the water 1 mile off Port Isabel Monday morning.

"The positive results were definitely due to the fact that the four people had life jackets," said Chief Warrant Officer Homar Barrera, a search and rescue coordinator. "It is highly encouraged that all mariners wear lifejackets at all times, especially in high winds and unfamiliar waters."  

At 9:30 a.m., South Padre Island Police Department contacted Coast Guard Station South Padre Island watchstanders via phone to pass on a report from a good Samaritan that four people were in the water and clinging to their capsized 15-foot aluminium hull boat.

The station’s response boat crew arrived on scene at 9:44 a.m., pulling one adult and two children from the water. The fourth person was rescued by the South Padre Island Police Department.

"The Coast Guard has a great working relationship with the state and local government's marine units," Barrera said. "They are always willing to support the search and rescue mission and provide assistance. We are really grateful for their resources and their abilities to gain access to shallow water areas that we may not be able to get into."

The four individuals were without injury and were transported to Port Isabel.
