WWII SPAR visits Cleveland
CLEVELAND – Media are invited to attend a visit from a WWII Coast Guard SPAR at Coast Guard Marine Safety Unit Cleveland at 10 a.m. Thursday.

When: Thursday 10 a.m.
Where: MSU Cleveland 1055 E. 9th St., Cleveland, Ohio, 44199
Mabel Johnson, a 102-year-old Coast Guard SPAR, served in Cleveland at the payroll and administrative offices in the Keith Building during WWII through V-E Day. The event will begin at 10 a.m. with opening remarks by Rear Adm. June Ryan, commander, Ninth Coast Guard District, followed by remarks by Mrs. Johnson. There will be photo and interview opportunities from 10:20 to 11:15.
SPARS are the first women who served in the Coast Guard. They selflessly answered Uncle Sam’s call when men were sent oversees leaving a need for military support in the U.S.
