Coast Guard rescues 4 from vessel taking on water near Captree Island

NEW YORK — Crewmembers from Coast Guard Station Fire Island rescued four people in distress near Captree State Park, New York, Sunday afternoon.
At approximately 2:15 p.m., watchstanders at Sector Long Island Sound received a call from Suffolk County Dispatch stating a vessel with four people aboard was taking on water near Captree Island.
Sector Long Island Sound command center issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched a Coast Guard Station Fire Island rescue boatcrew.
At approximately 2:20 p.m., crewmembers aboard a Coast Guard 29-foot Response Boat-Small arrived on scene to find the individuals in life jackets aboard the 19-foot pleasure craft.
According to the rescue crew, there was about six to eight inches of water in the boat and the on board bilge pumps were not operating. The source of the flooding could not be located.
The four people were transferred to the Coast Guard boat and brought to Captree Boat Basin. Suffolk County Marine was able to tow the vessel to the boat basin.
No injuries were reported.
