MIAMI — The Coast Guard responded to a downed aircraft Wednesday approximately 17 nautical miles northwest of Opa Locka.

Coast Guard watchstanders received a relay call from the Opa Locka Air Traffic Control Tower reporting a downed Piper Cherokee airplane. The watchstanders then diverted an Air Station Miami MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew to assist.

After arriving on scene the helicopter crew landed on the levee nearby and checked on the two people aboard the airplane.
