MILWAUKEE – Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan in Milwaukee is hosting a media availability to answer questions about the increase in false distress and probable hoax calls and to provide a rare glimpse inside the sector command center Tuesday at 1 p.m.
WHO: Representatives from Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan Response Division and the Command Center
WHAT: Media availability to discuss increase in false distress calls around Lake Michigan and a firsthand look into the Sector Lake Michigan Command Center to see how the Coast Guard responds to a distress call.
WHERE: Coast Guard Sector Lake Michigan
2420 S. Lincoln Memorial Dr.
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
WHEN: Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at 1 p.m.
During the start of the boating season, there was a substantial increase in the number of distress calls across the Great Lakes, including Lake Michigan, compared to 2016 as mentioned in our release of June 29, 2017. Many of these calls have been determined likely to be false distress calls, which are those made either by phone or over a marine radio by a person claiming to have witnessed a potential distress situation or to be in distress, in danger or in an emergency situation.
