Coast Guard assists disabled vessel

 

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard assisted a disabled vessel with four people aboard approximately 60 miles south of Navarre, Florida, Thursday.

Watchstanders at the Eighth Coast Guard District Command Center in New Orleans received a notification at 9:52 a.m. of an activated personal locator beacon registered to a 24-foot boat south of Navarre.

District watchstanders directed the launch of Coast Guard Cutter Cobia from Mobile, Alabama, and an HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane crew from Coast Guard Aviation Training Center Mobile to assist the vessel.

Coast Guard watchstanders also requested the launch of a Navy MH-60S helicopter crew from the Dragonmaster Aviation Unit at the Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division located in Panama City, Florida, to assist.

The Coast Guard airplane crew located the vessel at 11:44 a.m.

The airplane crew established communications with the vessel and was notified that the vessel’s engine was disabled.

The Navy helicopter crew arrived on scene at 11:54 a.m. and stayed on scene until Coast Guard Cutter Cobia arrived at 2:11 p.m. and repaired the vessel’s engine.
